Lew "Sully" Sullivan (04/02/1923 - 11/07/2008) One
of the area's most well known anglers has died. Lew "Sully" Sullivan
passed away on Friday at the Warrenton Overlook. Lew has been failing in
health for some time, with Neropathy affecting his legs, causing his
inability to walk and to continue fishing. Lew started his downward
spiral with the death of his beloved wife, Leila, in 1986. He never
stopped talking about her and their relationship. He truly missed her
and never got over it.
Fishing was always a part of his life. He
honed his skills in the WSSC lakes in Maryland where he took under his
wing, a young fellow named Roland Martin. Due in large part to Lew's
guidance, Roland went on to win more events than any other professional
angler in B.A.S.S. history. He moved to Northern Virginia twenty years
ago and spent most of his time on Occoquan Reservoir. He joined New
Horizon Bass Anglers and fished the nearby Potomac River.
In recent years, he delighted in taking
his grandson, Chris, fishing. They both loved trout fishing at Locust
Shade Park. When his legs got too bad to walk, he nurtured his fishing
habit by watching fishing shows on TV.
He was both a delight and an old
curmudgeon on a fishing boat. He loved to tell stories and to catch
fish. Although his abilities were somewhat limited in later years, he
still managed to hold his own. He will be sorely missed by some of us,
the ones who knew him best.
Hopefully, he will find a new fishing hole
where he can both fish and be with Leila.
Rest in peace, Sully.........
